Bluestocking Film Series - Las Rubias (The Blondes)
Blonde, pretty and delinquent: nothing stands in Marta and Pepa's way... except another blonde. Inspired by real events.
Interview with Writer/Director Carlota Pereda
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thanks, Carmela! After years working in TV on other people's shows, I simply made the movie I wanted to watch.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
The Blondes is an action comedy with Big Badass Women. You'll have a lot of fun.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I simply can't work on a project unless I find an emotional or political attachment to it. I write genre movies, fun movies, but it's always these themes that push me to follow an idea through.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The movie is inspired by a true event. The first draft was very close to reality. But it didn't move me. I went back to the theme, identity and social justice, and found an emotional attachment to it. I discarded everything and developed new characters for the story. From then on, we stayed true to the screenplay whilst shooting, always allowing room for improvisation and fun.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
It's been great! It's worked fantastically well on the festival circuit, both nationally and internationally, with over 90 selections thus far. The best thing is having audience members come to me afterwards saying they've loved it.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Always. All the time. There's always a reason for people's criticism and personal opinions and sometimes it can make your movie better. I did a screening before the final cut. It was fun and useful.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I hope people would want to watch our short film. The Blondes deserve a bigger audience.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
My producer, Pantalla Partida and I are looking for investors/networks interested in developing The Blondes, the movie, with us. Anything that helps us get there would be of help.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I don't know if you've watched "Sullivan's Travels" by Preston Sturges. I want the same as the protagonist: I want to make people laugh, have fun. And when they replay the movie back at home or driving in their cars, maybe the theme will get them thinking.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
It's a tricky question as it can lead to spoilers. Let's just say it is based on a true event: a gang of Blondes in Sao Paolo that kidnapped other blondes and pretended to be them, as all blondes look the same. But are they really?
Would you like to add anything else?
Come watch us! You'll have a laugh.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
All members of the team are big names in Spain's film industry. Maggie Civantos, our protagonist and star of "Locked Up" is now working on Netflix's "Las Chicas del Cable", Marta Hazas from "Velvet" is working on the sequel and Eva Garcia Vacas, our "Pepa", is doing theatre in Madrid. They're all attached to The Blondes, the movie.
I, writer/director, am working on the feature and my next short, a horror tale about bullying called "Piggy" that I'll start shooting this September.
