IFS Film Festival - Inspirit
Bad things happen to good people when we choose darkness.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Trevor Kyle Hansford
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I made this film for several reasons. It’s layered and a personal representation of my experience. People generally do not want to deal with the very common problem of drug and alcohol consumption as related to finance and romance. Also the fact that most people are good and lose their selves to chemical addiction. It was a personal challenge to create a piece that focused on a visual narrative with the smallest amount of dialogue. I wanted the audience to connect with the emotion of the piece and not have the need to have witty banter drive the piece.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Most audience members have these experiences in their families and it’s not addressed. It gives some people a different insight into addiction and will possibly work as a catharsis and representation of loved one's plight and actual feelings when dealing with addiction.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Universally it is a dark journey which brings to light the fact that when we choose darkness we lose ourselves.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The script initially was an attempt to out an empathetic face to people the get lost to addiction. Especially parents. It grew into a story which all people can relate and explore the possibility that there are no good outcomes to addiction. Not even after death.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Very positive feedback so far.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback generally is about performance and not story. We are a group of friends. No actors. I asked my friends to help me out and they all stepped up.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I just believe that the content is relatable. It is a journey. Its pacing and cinematography along with the score drive the possibility that it’s feasible.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
All of the above. I am a new filmmaker and want to explore avenues to monetize stories.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I know that this will not change the world. but what it does accomplish is grabbing the audiences attention and taking them on a journey for 11 minutes.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
It addresses a few topics.
1. What is the benchmark for good parenting?
2. Does the after life exist and are spirits riddled with guilt from life choices?
Would you like to add anything else?
I appreciate you reaching out.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I did pretty much everything in the film except on camera. I have another film in festivals called “Inventory” and am finishing a script about my journey as Prince's DJ and the resident DJ for many famous clubs like the Roxbury etc.
