GET REEL 2017 - Cast Me Healthy

June 10, 2017 by Carmela Baranowska

Raised by a scientist, taught by life and toughened by love.

Interview with Director Gabor Kukucska

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

I was looking for individuals with inspiring stories, something that others can learn from to feature on InspireFlix and after my initial pre production interview with Wendy I felt her strong character and life lessons are a good fit for what I’m trying to showcase.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

It's always a challenge making a low budget short documentary when you only have limited production time - I’ve filmed Cast Me Healthy in about 5 hours - especially if one tries to style it as candidly as possible with characters casually chatting with one another, however it is very rewarding when it works out.

Cast Me Healthy

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

I always start by interviewing the main character to find 4-6 key elements in their story that I can capture. I look for elements that while link to one another, distinctive enough to move the story forward in an enjoyable way.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

The reviews so far all positive, most of them highlight Wendy’s empowering, charismatic character thanking her for doing things differently and how positive she is. I love when I manage to naturally portray someone’s personality which I think I’ve managed to do in this one.

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

More visibility is a must these days, I hope to entertain, make people think and reflect on their own life.

Cast Me Healthy

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

Film festival directors and journalists for sure.

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

I hope that it wins at GET REAL and that it gets selected by other festivals to spread its message far and wide.

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

I don’t think we challenge the status quo often enough… there are many systems and social structures that have been around for a long a time and have not evolved much. Mental health is most definitely one of these areas so I wonder how many unconventional ideas might have been swept under the rug that would have helped people.

Cast Me Healthy

What are the key creatives developing or working on now?

More short documentaries to feature on InspireFlix.

Interview: May 2017
