IFS Film Festival - The Dirndl

May 08, 2017 by Carmela Baranowska

An internet therapy session reveals a man's most primal fear...and it comes in a size two.

Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Ned Farr

Watch film here:

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

A friend of mine borrowed my film camera to make a short film and it occurred to me how much dust had been gathering on that camera. I wondered why the heck wasn’t I making more films with it! So as soon as I got it back I quickly wrote and shot this film and in a week it was in the can. You could say I made this film to justify owning a RED.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

You should watch this film because it’s short, silly, and slightly salty.

How do personal and universal themes work in your film?

My personal life often makes its way, in some form, into my films and scripts. This project however, while it reflects some observations that I believe are universal, is uniquely personal in that it’s the first film I’ve put myself IN.

The Dirndl

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

I once teased my girlfriend about Halloween costumes, and urged her to wear something she usually would never consider. Seemed like the perfect jumping off point for a short film. I didn’t let myself linger over the script though—I only had a few days before Halloween so I needed to lock it fast. Turns out all the footage I shot of actual Halloween shenanigans didn’t work as well as my characters description of them, so they didn’t make it into the final cut. In essence, I could have shot this film anytime. But the tight Halloween deadline made it exciting.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

It’s a massive hit. With my mother. Who hasn’t seen it.

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

I’m pleased to see that my performance doesn’t make this movie funny in the Tommy Wiseau kind of way.

The Dirndl

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

Movies need to be seen, not read about, and this is one of great ways to make that happen.

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

Agents! I need one, at this point.

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

Interest in my past work, and work to come, is all the reception one could hope for!

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

Why do women dress as sexy as possible for Halloween? What happened to Halloween being scary?

Would you like to add anything else?

If you’re not ready to hear the answer to question 10, best not to ask.

What are the key creatives developing or working on now?

I’m finishing a rewrite for my third feature film, which I hope to start shooting in 2018.
