Tell Them I Exist / Dis leur que j'existe
Tell Them I Exist sheds a light on the little known situation of Western Sahara by telling the story of Naâma Asfari, a Sahrawi independence activist and human rights jurist, and of his wife, Claude Mangin, who has supported her husband and the Sahrawi’s struggle for freedom throughout the years.
Interview with Writer/Director Manue Mosset
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
We made the film to raise awareness about the ongoing situation in Western Sahara and of the fate of the Sahraoui prisoner Naâma Asfari.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
You should watch this film to hear the Sahrawi people’s voice and and helping them obtain justice by spreading their message.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The personal theme is shown by the story of Naâma Asfari and his wife Claude Mangin. The universal aspect of this film refers to Western Sahara's conflict with the Maroccon Kingdom since 1975. The territory is still considered by the UN as a « non-autonomous territory ».
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The script and film evolved with the case of Sahrawi people and their relation with politics like the Maroccon governement and the United Nations. The fate of Naâma Asfari and the prisoners is still changing by the trial and government's decision.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We received positive and hopeful feedback from NGOs and associations and their desire to fight for Sahrawi’s independance and in the other part a negative feedback from the Moroccan nationalists and the Moroccan government.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It wasn’t a surprise for negative feedback because we expected that but it also challenged us. However, the generous donation by 300 individuals in France, Morocco, Western Sahara and other parts of the world encouraged us.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Creating this documentary is already a huge step but making it available to the most people possible is essential in making the Sahrawi people’s voice be heard and helping them to obtain justice.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
The best will be distributors, film festival directors who are interested by human rights and journalists to spread the film in the media.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We want to give you iinformation to know about this case and after its reception raise awareness and a need to participate in this project.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Do you know Naâma Asfari or at least the situation in Western Sahara?
Would you like to add anything else?
If you are interested in this subject don’t hesitate to share this documentary as much as possible to help raise Naâma’s voice.
