Cannes Short Film Corner - Dear George
After his high school sweetheart sends him an epic breakup letter and moves out of state for a job, a heartbroken gamer takes off on a cross country trip filled with a TSA shakedown, Acapella group, bad decisions and a "borrowed" chicken costume - all for love!
Interview with Writer/Director Emily Skyle
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I made the film because after selling multiple scripts, I noticed the quirky nature of my characters were never being cast as they were written and I wanted to honor my characters and bring them to life.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Dear George will take you on a sweet emotional journey filled with elements that are outside of the normal romantic comedy.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I think the personal themes of the film work on a universal level - dealing with rejection and overcoming your fears are both things that most people can relate to in their own lives.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The script began as a feature film, editing it down into a short film was a huge undertaking and exercise in letting go.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
So far, our reviews from Festivals, the media and audiences have been really encouraging. We are humbled by the awards we've won and are beyond grateful for all of the support our film has received.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
One element we've received the most challenging commentary on has been our casting. We knew breaking the Hollywood mold by casting a 300+lb man as our romantic lead would be questioned - but we didn't expect to be asked about it in almost every Q&A panel and interview. I wrote the role with a tall guy in mind, George's size didn't matter. When Neil Fannin came in to read for George, we all fell in love with him immediately - I do not regret choosing him, he's amazing.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
The more people that learn about our film, the better chance we have of bring the full length feature film to life.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We would love a solid Sales Agent to join our team and help us connect with the best fit for us when it comes to a buyer and distributor. Also, Festival Directors and Journalists are a huge asset when it comes to shining a light on a film.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
The impact I'd like Dear George to have on an audience is one of inspiration. I want people to face their fears and take chances on pursuing everything that they cherish in their lives.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Can people that are set in their ways really change?
What are the key creatives you're developing or working on now?
We are currently working towards making the full length version of Dear George. We are also developing a dramatic thriller called Akia, set in Alaska in an Inuit Village.
Interview: May 2017
