Interview with Writer/Director More Raça

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

Thank you very much! It has been my concern for a long time when I heard many stories of women who were privy to the right to parental inheritance. As an activist of womens rights, I would contact many women during my work to hear their problems, and this phenomenon is very worrisome in the region. I saw that it was very important to address this issue in my film, to show this concern with the desire to make this story affect people and the point of view regarding women's inheritance and many other problems that are shown during the film.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

With this film I want you to see how a woman is treated in a patriarchal society where women’s rights are limited and her life is difficult.

How do personal and universal themes work in your film?

It is a personal film but I was very happy when I saw people from different countries and backgrounds react to it. In my view, one thing that can be seen as very personal is the same time universal because different people can relate to it in many ways.

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

The film is based on a true story and this is the reason why we wanted to script to be final and not to change throughout the development process, we wanted to stick to the story and to be true to it.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

Since our world premiere last year in September at the Raindance Film Festival, we had so much feedback from filmmakers, festivals, critics and people who had the chance to see the film in different places. I have received much positive feedback and I was happy to see people are responding to the film. As a filmmaker that’s a very positive film when people speak to you, or write a review and so see many ways people relate to your work - that’s the most important thing for me as a director.

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

The feedback has been very positive and has motivated me for further work, and I have been surprised by feedback of the Europen and American film critics and filmmakers that although the theme of the film is regional and mostly includes people from the Balkans they captured the topic very well and I was very happy to hear or read their points of view regarding the film.

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

The promotion of directors from the Balkans, especially for those who come from Kosovo, as I do, is very important. I am a director and I live in a country in southeastern Europe that is quite isolated from Europe and the world in general and such promotion along with the festivals is a great opportunity to present my work and my stories.

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

I want this film to bring a massage to people that women should have their rights and their voices heard and that they should be free to make their own choices in life.

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

What are the challenges that a woman passes through in a patriarchal society.

Would you like to add anything else?

It was great speaking to you and thank you for giving our Home a space to be promoted.

What are the key creatives developing or working on now?

I am working on my new film titled “She” (Ajo in Albanian), we have received a positive answer forom a Script Session Studio that will be held in Washington where it will be read by a panelist of well know filmmakers and producers.
