Bentonville Film Festival - Saving Sally

April 12, 2017 by Carmela Baranowska

Marty is an aspiring comic-book artist who is secretly in love with his best friend, Sally, the gadget inventor. Like every love story, there are complications: Sally has monsters for parents and a literal dick for a boyfriend, while Marty has the innate ability to do nothing about everything despite his vivid fantasies of defending the love of his life from the big bad world.

Interview with Director Avid Liongoren

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

I love 2d animation & I love working with actors so we made a film that combines both.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

Because it would make your heart glow :)

Saving Sally

How do personal and universal themes work in your film?

I really like miso based ramen, with extra egg & chasyu… o wait, I’m hungry & do not know how to answer this question. Sorry!

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?

It has remained pretty much the same all through out. We were very committed to telling the very simple love story of an artist boy who secretly loves his inventor best friend who happens to have a literal dick monster for a boyfriend.

Saving Sally

What type of feedback have you received so far?

Mostly positive, last month we won the Jury Prize at Portugal’s Fantasporto Film Fest in it’s Main competition. We also won the Audience Choice Award & got an Honorable Mention on the Orient Express section.

More importantly, my favorite Persian place gave me a free shawarma because the owner liked our film. So hurray to free shawarma!

Saving Sally

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

I am surprised I can get free food because of the film.

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

Hopefully more free food!

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

All of the above would be great. Add some faeries, golems & aliens as well.

Saving Sally Director Avid Liongoren

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

A warm fuzzy impact. Like being hit by a feather cannonball that disintegrates & fills the room with avian snow.

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

"Can you really save another person? And what does 'saving' mean exactly?"

Would you like to add anything else?

Shawarma is only as good as its garlic sauce.

What are the key creatives developing or working on now?

I’m working on a new animated project… a dramatic one involving dogs in romantic relationships called “You Son Of A Bitch!"
