FINconceivable
What happens when sharks disappear?
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Lily Williams
Watch FINconceivable on the filmmaker’s website
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you! I made FINconceivable to highlight the importance sharks play in our ocean ecosystems and the world at large in a way that is easily accessible for all ages.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Sharks are Apex Predators and they need our help. 100 million sharks are killed every year. Overfishing has sharks being hunted in a way that is truly unsustainable. Environments unravel without their Apex Predators and our world relies on the health of our ocean ecosystems.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
FINconceivable focuses on our oceans and world's environmental health by examining the trophic cascade in relation to sharks and overfishing.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
I maintained the central themes and end goal but went through major revisions along the way, focusing on specific wording that would drive themes home and be relatable to children while inspiring adults.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I have enjoyed that FINconceivable has been loved by people from all over the world! From Hong Kong to Scotland and Hawaii to Zimbabwe, this film has helped open the eyes and inspire people of all ages. That has been overall the best I could have hoped for!
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback has been really great overall!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I hope more people can be introduced to protecting sharks and maybe see sharks with a new perspective! I always hope to inspire people to help save sharks!
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Right now FINconceivable has a home on my website for all to view and I don't have any bigger plans at the moment. I am still entering film festivals when they come up, but not actively pursuing anything.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I hope that people will find saving sharks more approachable, that it inspires people to do further reading into ocean conservation, and make sustainable ocean changes at home.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What can you do in your every day life to help save sharks? There are tons of ways from the makeup you wear, to the food you eat! But it starts with a few simple changes at home.
Would you like to add anything else?
Thank you for taking the time to watch my film, FINconceivable! I hope it inspires you to help sharks and spread the word.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am working as a children's book author and artist. My first book, If Sharks Disappeared, explores the trophic cascade in relation to sharks disappearing from the ocean. Published by Roaring Brook Press, If Sharks Disappeared hits bookshelves June 13th, 2017! http://us.macmillan.com/ifsharksdisappeared/lilywilliams
