Feedback LA Film Festival - Conversations
Detective Drama in the Depths of Dublin
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Emma Jackson
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you! This is a film that I made for college. It is my first script and directorial debut.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
I would watch this film because I enjoy mysteries and character-driven stories. I would also watch it because it's short and sweet!
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
If you mean a personal theme is something that is close to me? Then I think the personal theme in this story is what it's like to be a woman which is represented by the main female character. The universal theme is racism and how people judge one another upon first glances.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
It evolved a lot over the course of pre-production. The script was originally 27 pages! And it soon became a neat and tidy script of 8 pages. I learned that the characters needed to say less and the story would come alive by itself through the character's actions and perhaps allow the audience to come to their own conclusions.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Most people have commented on the ending - some people liked it and some people didn't!
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I think feedback is hugely important and it means everything to me as a writer. It is important to see the world through other people's eyes as much as your own. In fact, I feel that I need more feedback.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
It would just be wonderful for more people to know about it!
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
It's a student film so there is no need for anyone to come on board. I have simply sent it into as many festivals as possible to get it out there.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Mostly, I would like people to enjoy the characters.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What makes us presume who would or wouldn't commit crimes?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I plan on writing my next script about domestic abuse and how those abused are always making excuses about the 'controller/abuser' in the relationship.
Interview: December 2017
