High Falls Film Festival - Blue
Blue is a short film about the struggle of being different.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Maryam Farahzadi
Watch Blue here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you very much. I made this film to depict how people who look different, think different, behave different or live different may struggle in a society but they can still change the world!
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
To notify how people who don’t necessarily think like us may struggle in the society and try to eliminate any kind of discrimination from our world.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I believe that any body at any status may sympathize with my film character because we face this problem from the first day that we become aware to the world and people around us.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
It has changed a lot maybe more than 4-5 times.I had discussion with my advisor professor
Larson and my classmates to make it easier for regular audience to understand the meaning of
the film.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Thankfully most of the feedback was positive so far and most of my audiences could follow the message of my film.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Although my film has a deep meaning but it has a very straightforward story that in my opinion everybody can easily communicate with it. “Blue” has also been officially selected for the kids competition category at Fantoche film festival, which means it has a very simple story that children could also grasp the idea.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I would like to show it to more audiences and want them to think about the message of my film and I would be happy to hear any feedback from them.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I think all of them especially buyers, distributors, film festival directors can play an important role to amplify the message of this film, since this is a very important issue specially these days!
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I am a student that immigrated from Iran to United states to pursuing my education in animation 2 years ago to tell my stories through my films. I have had so many challenges and
obstacles personally to achieve my goals so far. But I would like to be able to become more
of a well known filmmaker here in the United States and be able to communicate with my audience through my films better.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
I think a key question would be: How would it be if people can put any discrimination away
and respect each other. Therefore in my opinion world would be more peaceful place to live.
Would you like to add anything else?
I believe that short film is a very good medium for exploring such important subjects. especially animation which has always been capable of telling more deep meanings through more imaginative and creative world. So I think this industry should be supported well to encourage young filmmakers to make more films everyday.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Today, I am working on my third short film called Goldfish, exploring the nature of being a
dreamer/visionary and how courage and passion can change one’s life. The core message of
story is very important to me not only because I personally had to overcome many challenges
and obstacles to achieve my dreams, but also because of the current political climate which is
affecting the lives of many dreamers in the United States.
