Interview with Writer/Director Rachel Meguerdijian

Congratulations! Why did you make your trilogy?

I have always had a passion for music videos, so I decided to make a narrative short story as a music video trilogy. I started the concept from scratch: writing, composing and recording the music for three separate songs that would all come together under one motif.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this trilogy?

The trilogy delivers a message that many of us are facing today in an innovative way.

Plus, who doesn’t like to listen to great music, right?

How do personal and universal themes work in your trilogy?

On a personal level, a lot of the moments are inspired by events I faced or saw people around me encounter. As for a universal theme, the struggle that my main character goes through can be identified in anyone of us. Each viewer will connect to the theme and relate it back to their own experiences.

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

The script and film evolved on many levels. During production, there were many challenges that I faced. I had to arrange it with what I have on hand. Many decisions had to be made that lead to changes. However, I kept the main idea intact. This is where the beauty of filmmaking comes in. Just like a puzzle, the pieces came together the way they should be to reach this outcome.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

People who watched the trilogy came out of it pleasantly surprised. I was intrigued with the wide range of interpretations for the open ending of the story. I won’t spoil it of course, but I smiled for every perception I received. Some of my favorite spontaneous reactions were: “I got goose bumps watching it” and “I love the music, how can I get it?.”

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

What I found surprising was the diverse feedback I received regarding the editing decisions of the trilogy, such as why I intercut different time frames within each song.

The feedback got me questioning if the post-production process had been executed differently, would the message of the story still have stayed intact?

What are you looking to achieve by having your trilogy more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

My aim is to have a diverse audience exposed to my film and its universal message, and I feel that this is a great platform to do so.

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this trilogy’s message?

Journalists would be vital to helping amplify my film’s message to more viewers.

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this trilogy to have?

First of all, I want the audience to enjoy the experience of watching the trilogy. I hope that everyone becomes inspired to break free from what society and the people around them expect them to be.

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this trilogy?

I’m sure some people after watching the trilogy will have a moment of introspection and may question themselves “How one can be true to oneself without fearing judgement from others?”

Yes! It would be remiss of me if I didn’t thank my incredible cast & crew, and everyone who supported me throughout this process. I have a sincere appreciation for each and everyone of them.

What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?

I am currently developing a feature script that is based on a true story. It will focus on a pressing and divisive topic that is at the forefront of today’s current events.

About the writer, director and producer:

Rachel Meguerdijian is a Canadian/Lebanese director. She has worked on several international TV commercials along with a variety of short films. Her recent short film “Link St.” was accepted and won several awards this year in film festivals around Los Angeles. Rachel is attracted to innovative and challenging projects that help her grow and expand her career in filmmaking.

Kendra McDonald was raised in Mount Vernon, New York but is now based in Los Angeles where she has produced several short films. She recently finished her short movie “Letters” that is now screening in festivals.

Lead Actress, Stephanie Atala is an actress and singer living in Beirut, Lebanon. She has appeared in various national and regional TV commercials and has starred in many short films, theater productions, and TV series. Stephanie has also been a part of many concerts and performances around Lebanon and the Middle East as a lead singer.
