A chance arrest will give Detective Davis and the man she has arrested a hard lesson in causality after it becomes apparent that they have crossed paths before.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Meko Winbush
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
To be honest a small part of it was because of boredom, but the main reason stemmed from a desire to do something creative outside of the regular 9-5 job. I edit film trailers for a living, and although it is very much a creative field, there's not a whole lot of creative control over the pieces you create. At the end of the day you're trying to please the client. Creating a piece with like minded individuals where we had complete creative freedom was very appealing. A large portion of my free time is spent writing, and I wanted to do a piece with a strong female lead against the back drop of a night city scape. The thriller genre has always been of particular interest to me.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
I find that if you have an interesting character people are going to want to see what they do -- I think this film has that in its lead character. This film is a drama, it's a thriller, it's tense, and it has relatable themes.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
This film touches on themes of anger, guilt, and forgiveness. It also focuses on the larger theme of causality, as the story traces a life changing event back to its origin -- something I think we've all done at one time or another.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The script didn't change much between its completion and the start of filming. For the sake of time and budget there was a scene or two that was cut, and because the film still worked without those scenes it proved that we didn't necessarily need them in the first place. We also eventually made the decision several months after completion of the film to re-edit it down from a 17 minute version to a just under 14 minutes version, as length is somewhat of a factor when making the festival rounds. And once again the film functioned fine without the scenes we lost.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Feedback has been very positive. An overwhelming amount of people have complimented us on how much they liked the pace at which the film moved, and how they actually wanted more after it ended.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback hasn't really challenged my point of view, but as someone who is always hypercritical of anything creative that I do, it's an incredibly nice surprise to see people responding positively to something I've made.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Mostly exposure, as I would honestly love to attract and collaborate with other filmmakers who are interested in genres similar to my film. I also have several feature screenplays I would love to see get made. Storytelling is of great importance to me.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
All of the above.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I hope that if even for a short time people will be able to escape and watch a somewhat interesting and entertaining story that won't leave a bad taste in their mouths.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What is causality? or Does everything happen for a reason?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Myself and producer/lead actor Ramsey Krull are currently working on a super short. I recently optioned a dark/thriller feature screenplay, and am currently writing the pilot for a crime drama mini-series.
