Tulsa American Film Festival - I love you like science
A poem from a broken heart
Interview with filmmakers Claire Collins, Andrew Gianetto & Mat Miller
Watch I love you like science here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Andrew: This film was made because of a simple conversation I had with an incredibly talented human being who forever changed my life. Claire had influenced me before this conversation several times with the raw energy and passion in her words. Energy and Passion can get far in poetry, but developing stories within those attributes is where Claire excels in. So, we were talking one night at a weekly open mic poetry event, and she told me this poem that she wrote recently about a co-worker of mine. When she recited this poem, I wasn’t thinking about the subject. I closed my eyes and saw myself in a completely other world.
I was looking to work on something for about four months and I found it. Next step was to find someone who could be impacted as much as I was by this poem. I’d always wanted to work with Mat because I was thoroughly impressed by the visual project he would post on his Instagram. With the subject of the poem being about rooted around space, I thought this would be a perfect project for us to create.
Mat: When Andrew approached me to make the film he painted a picture that I could relate to. I had recently been through a breakup and when he sent me the the poem, I knew this would be my next project. Andrew finished his screenplay and handed it off to me for some adjustments. We bounced it back and forth until we were confident in our story. The collaboration was a great experience.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Claire: words lead you into a world that the visuals create. This is a story most of us have felt before. Heartbreak is a dark place made of paths of the past. Once you find the exit out of this maze, you end up a better person. This film is a powerful allegory to show how important love is to each and every one of us.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Simple: The two are intertwined. Her personal experience affects her outlook for the rest of her life. Something that Mat had thought about is how to show one’s feelings within the vastness of space and time. We are all so small in the universe but something within our world propels all of us to be our own beings. We hold the power within ourselves to flow through this universe and understand it to our own. We all desire to share those experiences with someone which in return makes it the experience whether it be good or bad.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The poem itself was tweaked by two words but during editing we cut out an entire sentence for the poem to make it flow better. The original outline of the shots we were getting changed slightly during shooting because of the setting. Mat added some visual effect ideas into the script, for example the last shot in the film that pushed the feelings of being alone in the world.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Generally the feedback has been positive. We have had an overwhelming number of people that relate to this film and have had a lot of people cry. What has excited us are the conversations about what the poem means to them.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
We all have different feelings from the film but overall it still remains the same with all the types of feedback we have received, what it has shown is how people react to art.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We just want to share this project and hope more people can see our film. We would love for someone halfway across the globe to see what we have done here; to be influenced by the words of Claire Collins. I would also love to hear more feedback about the film.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
The internet is a shotgun blast into the abyss. We would hope for someone to help us or other inspiring film makers to distribute our work. Currently we are looking for a home for the film somewhere possibly curated with our style in mind.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
We want people to see themselves in her words, see themselves in bed with that special person, see themselves looking at the stars holding that special someone, and walk back into reality a different person.
We live in a time where people are getting married less and less and finding the special someone may seem like a struggle and questions of love and hope may come up but we want you to know that it's part of life's journey, to ride the waves of time and enjoy all you can.
Would you like to add anything else?
Blessed to be considered and thank you for the support.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Andrew is currently working on writing a television series of short stories involving humans with alcohol. Claire is currently acting on a multiple projects in Atlanta and Mat is writing his first Sci-Fantasy feature.
