Slamdance - clip-135-02-05
The memories we store in our cameras eventually become the only memories we have. In the wake of the September 11th NYC tragedy, the temperamental medium of vhs serves as a coping mechanism for the dislocation, helplessness, and anger while nature illustrates the lack of control we have on events that come to pass.
Interview with Producer, Director, & Editor: Sasha Gransjean
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
This film was more of a coping mechanism than an actual project per se. I made this film when I discovered it in my old footage and decided to present it as a short film.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Watch this film to challenge your expectations of what a short documentary should be.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Themes of this film are at once extremely personal and to an extent universal. No matter who we are, we define ourselves through our perspectives on the world around us. This film explores one such perspective in meditative and humorous ways.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The main evolution of this film from the time it was shot to the moment when I decided to package it as a short film or video art piece was that I cut a few minutes of my musical torments upon Buster and added the subtitles to make sure everyone could understand the humorous dynamic between my mother and I.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
People seem to find the piece very relatable in ways that I did not anticipate, there’s a sort of simplicity in its minimalism that I suppose lends to that.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I am definitely pleasantly surprised to find that the film has received as much of a reception as it has!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Any chance to reach out to more people and challenge the standard of visible filmmaking and video art out there helps to change the standard of consumption in my humble opinion.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
At this point, I’m looking for producers and sponsors to work with on future projects more so than any help with this one.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would like this film to interest people that see it in the more simple themes of life even amidst tragedy and chaos.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
A key question in my mind would be, “Is this film actually a film?”
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am currently developing a feature documentary on a group of people that were filmed twenty years ago as teenagers in the late 90s (including myself), contrasted with who we are now.
I am also working on a documentary about at-risk high school kids in Los Angeles that are presented with the option to stay out of trouble by helping to produce films about their own lives.
