Singularity
Sometimes, the complexity of simplicity makes us fail to preserve the fundament of all we are and all we represent. But reaching awareness is not about the end, it is about the beginning. SINGULARITY takes us back to zero hour, 4.5 billion years back in time. It is the story of an indescribable hazard and a singular fortune: the fortune of being a human.
Interview with Director Roman De Giuli
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you very much! I am deeply fascinated by organic visuals and practical effects, that’s why I wanted to shoot another experimental short after my first one „STREAM“.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
You should watch this film because of its alternative artistic approach, its message and its beauty.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
It works fine if personal and universal themes or goals go together. With “SINGULARITY” I wanted to address something which really moves me for a long time. It is the destruction of our nature and planet earth and how we are not able to see its uniqueness. I wanted to bring the focus back to the beginning, the wonder of life and our existence. And this is something universal at the same time, something we can relate to if we allow getting into it.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
This kind of experimental short works different than a usual script. You first work out a practical method which you can use for your narrative purpose. After that, you create a rough story line which guides you through the production process. You’ll face a lot of different problems, because the materials I use do not behave like an actor. It is possible to control certain actions, movements, colors, the framing and so on. But at the end there is also a lot of random stuff you shoot. With time, you close more and more gaps in your story until you have all the visuals you need.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I have to say, that there was a lot of positive feedback and media coverage, especially my two vimeo staff picks got a lot of attention and I am very thankful for that.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Indeed, I was surprised. The interest in my work is a huge motivation to become better, getting more professional and pushing the boundaries in organic visual FX.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Wearemovingstories.com features a lot of inspiring film and I am glad to be part of it. I hope to get in touch with more people for networking and a creative exchange!
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
In fact, I’d need help from a lot of different people to amplify this film’s message, but in the first place I’m just glad if people enjoy my work. From a business point of view I am more into stock footage than film production, so I am very interested to proceed in this field.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Very simple: take action, everyone counts, you can make a difference!
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
We do not lack knowledge, it is simply time to act upon what is reality. So the question is: if we know everything we need to act appropriately, what will pave us the way to do so?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am currently working on a commercial project for a fair and in 2017 I will release at least one new experimental macro short.
