Interview with Writer/Director Jason Petrovitch
Watch Time Portal Glory Hole here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I wanted to make a short animation that was longer than the usual 3 minute ones that are so common. I was also looking for a way to showcase my writing a little more by choosing a narrative with more substance than my previous shorts.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you have any interest in the issue of gentrification, or just want to watch something funny.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
People being priced out of their own homes is something that happens everywhere and I have had to move out of places because they were turned into high rent condominiums in the past.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The script took me about 5 days to write, so there wasn’t much time for anything to evolve. The only issue I have had was trying to find people to collaborate with on it. Everyone wanted to be paid for their time, and I simply can’t afford to pay anyone. So apart from my wife, who edited the script and supplied a voice, I had to do the entire project on my own and it took me a year and a half from start to finish.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
People that like it seemed to really like it. Other people seem to not have the patience, or little interest in the subject matter. The title seems to make a lot of people think that there will be the instant gratification of a time traveling penis throughout the whole thing, but that is only a minor part of it, and certainly not the point I’m trying to make. There is also a lot of American and British history involved, and that limits the appeal and understanding with regard to international audiences.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The only effect it has had on me, honestly, is the realization that attention spans have deteriorated markedly within the past ten years. If you don’t grab the audiences’ interest out of the gate, you have pretty much lost them for the duration and that can be difficult when you are trying to set up your piece so that a valid point can be made by the end.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Exposure that showcases my writing is the primary goal. I honestly don’t enjoy the animation process and hope that I never have to animate another project again. The only reason I made an animation piece is because I could achieve my vision with very little help from others.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I’m not really sure that I need any of those people. The piece is done and now I can move on with my writing, and that’s really what I am anxious to do at this point.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
My primary hope is that people would appreciate that I made a short that is completely original with respect to writing and animation style. I really wanted to make something that is not derivative of anything that exists to this point.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Is gentrification really all that bad?
Would you like to add anything else?
This is more than I have ever said about this short. I couldn’t possibly think of anything else.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am writing scripts and trying to get involved in live action productions. My wife, Jennifer Kietzman, is a poet, and will continue writing her beautiful prose for as long as she is able.
Here is a sample of her work:
