Interview with Writers/Directors/Producers Alex Kavutskiy & Ariel Gardner
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
We had just finished shooting a feature and wanted to shoot something small and simple. We'd also been watching a lot of Black Mirror and wanted to make something in that sci-fi space.
Also we watched an Eric Rohmer movie starring a guy who looked like our friend comedian/actor Paul Isakson and we wanted to see the funny man in a dramatic role.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you're in the audience, you don't have a choice but to watch it. Unless you leave.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I think it's amusing on the surface, but it speaks to me on a visceral level of how men tend to view and treat women in casual sex relationships and the often complicated aftermath of any seemingly innocent sexual encounter. Taken to the extreme of course.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
This was a pretty quick turnaround from concept to completion. We changed some dialogue on set but that was about it. A lot of the style of the short was figured out in production design.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We're really pleased to have gotten strong positive reactions so far. More than we expected. We just wanted to make it for fun, we didn't think it would be a "festival short."
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
This is one of our most simple shorts so now we're often thinking about simplifying our future shorts. Our impulse is always more complicated and more story beats, which isn't always bad, but now we're working harder to achieve simplicity.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We'll take any chance we can get to reach out and find like-minded audiences and filmmakers.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
If you're a blogger and wanna pass our stuff around, that'd be awesome. And if you're a producer with money that wants to give us money to make more stuff, that'd also be awesome.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Laugh, laugh, laugh, and then get scared and then maybe feel stuff and think about stuff. We hope people watch this online and pass it around when it's available.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

We think it's cool you guys are promoting shorts online. There should be more platforms for shorts.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
More shorts, trying to make another feature, pitching TV shows, typical Hollywood yadda yadda. If you live in LA, we do a live show every other month at the Nerdmelt Theater called Alex & Ariel's Six Flags Magic Mountain where we show shorts like Judy.
