Fantastic Fest - Death Metal
A metalhead gets passed down a satanic guitar that riffs to shreds.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Chris McInroy
Watch Death Metal here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
First of all I made it because I love making movies! But I really wanted to keep the momentum going from the success of my last short film, Bad Guy #2, into this short film and hopefully into my first feature length movie.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
This movie is definitely not for everyone. But if you’re in the audience for a screening that would include something like this then you are gonna dig it. It has comedy, practical effects, metal and some Satan.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I just try to make things that have things I like in them. Things I know that will be fun for an audience to watch and fun for my friends and I to make.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
Actually the final product stayed pretty close to the script. The script structure needed a protagonist it was missing on first draft, so that was added. The kills got more creative. And took some out because of budget. The editing is what took the longest because we kept trying so many things to see if it would work or help or hinder. There wasn’t a huge rush for a deadline, which was nice so we could take our time and sit on cuts for awhile and get feedback and digest what was said and all that.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
It’s been super positive! People really enjoy it thankfully. It premiered at Fantasia to a sold out crowd of 700 people, which was crazy fun. We’ve been getting into some amazing film festivals too. But I don’t think my parents like it very much!
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I always go through ups and down making a movie. I usually feel insecure about it and hope people like it during rough-cut stages and then I’ll get to a point where I think it’s great. Usually once picture is locked and everything starts coming together like music and effects and sound design. So the positive reactions have definitely felt good and is keeping me motivated.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible onwww.wearemovingstories.com
I’m not really looking to achieve anything. I just thought it sounded like a fun interview to do when you asked me if I wanted to do it. Any sort of publicity for a short filmmaker can only help. Unless of course it’s a shitty review.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I’m not sure who would want to amplify this movie’s message! But if they do they are probably pretty cool and we would get along great.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I really hope it helps me to make my first feature length movie. In any way.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Hey Chris, what the hell is wrong with you?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I’m working on my first feature film. It’s in the same vein as Death Metal and Bad Guy #2, a fast-paced horror comedy using gory practical effects. It’s about a janitor’s night of survival against a bunch of werewolves trapped in a hospital. Its called Intensive Carewolves.
