Repaired
Two paintings fall in love at a restoring house. But it won’t be so easy for them to be together.
Interview with Writer/Director Marcelo Barbosa
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you very much! I grew up in a family of art dealers. Ever since I was little I’ve been surrounded by all kinds of paintings so I guess it was only a matter of time for me to want to merge art with film and create a story that could take place in this particular scenario.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
It’s entertaining! I like to think that this is an original way of telling an inevitable love story that can be appreciated by audiences of all ages.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
“The Gardener” is a painting that goes to a restoring house in order to get repaired. There, he meets a painting named “Sophia” and falls in love at first sight.
I have always admired the “love at first sight” stories. In a world where, unfortunately, people seem to be further and further away from each other, the characters in this film still have their own special way of feeling a certain type of emotion that is still perfectly valid in a movie.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The project started with a very basic idea: “what if two paintings fell in love? How would they end up together?”. I knew I wanted to tell this story, but it wasn’t easy to get there. It took a lot of effort and drafts for this film to become what it is today. Looking back now to the first versions of this story I realized that it takes time for an idea to blossom.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
So far the project has been receiving great feedback from many people, which makes all the hard work the crew put into this project worth it. It fills me with joy to have heard that this was the best short film someone had seen this year. It always gets to me when people say they cried watching my film. For something like that to happen, I must have really succeeded in connecting the audience on the emotional level that I wanted. On top of all of that, “Repaired” has won many awards at film festivals, including “Best Drama Short” and “Best Director”. That really encourages me as an artist.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It definitely has. As a filmmaker, I find myself in a delicate spot: I’m recently graduated from Film School. “Repaired”, which is my Thesis Film, has become my calling card. With so much encouraging and positive feedback, I find myself more excited than ever to continue on this path and make my next project even better!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I know that WeAreMovingStories is a great venue for aspiring filmmakers such as myself to share our projects and hopefully have the right people seeing it.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
As of now, journalists. Making the project have a bigger reach would definitely increase opportunities for everyone involved in the film.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I made this movie with the purpose of it being entertaining. If the audience feels like they’ve experienced something that they really enjoyed watching and felt different emotions, then I’ve done my job.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Would you risk everything for love?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Right now I am constantly working on developing stories for my next projects. With “Repaired” I could get a fresh perspective on what type of content I wanted to create, so for my next project it will be a lot of work but I have a great feeling about them and I’m excited to share them with a new audience.
