Alone Together
Interview with Writer/Director Yianni Warnock
*
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Mainly because I enjoy the feeling of making films, the defeat, fear and suffering are strangely cathartic.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you are a member of the audience sad thing is you have no choice but to watch it.
Although I hope it will be a great mix of humour and despair that has a pinch of realism that will make you feel better about the seedy little lies you have been living for so long.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Universal themes are always best attacked through something simple. If the film does resonate on a universal level it is because we have succeeded to execute something simple and pure.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
Evolution is natural, I think it's a good thing to allow things to evolve and let your work become what it wants to be. In a million different ways the film evolved beyond my own little idea.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The feedback has all been positive so far although most people don't really go out of their way to give negative feedback to your face. I'm sure that's all saved for the dark shadows of gossip.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I've had positive feedback from people I didn't think it would resonate with. An audience of mainly Muslim middle aged women at an Egyptian screening surpassed my expectations. I was worried I'd be hung for some of the content but they seemed to really get into it!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Ideally I would love to achieve a delusional sense of self that might give me an extra boost of confidence when approaching a girl I am sweet about or gaining acceptance from my family and peers.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
The more people on board the better - the short film boat of people on board is resistant to sinking...
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
It has so far exceeded my expectations. We have a good sales agent in Europe, it will be going to air in several countries and we have a great online distribution deal coming up. Having said that I wouldn't complain about a few festival wins...
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
I'm not at all interested in conversations or debate. I hope my film is simply a good visceral experience that allows one to escape their mind and have an experience that resonates on a deep and cathartic level.
