Congratulations! Why is this film called 'Drifting'?
I gave myself the restrictions of only having one actor, and when I thought about the kind of stories that focus on one person the idea of someone on a desert island is what stuck. They're hard to find in suburban Melbourne though, so I took the story beats and substituted the situation with someone stuck at home due to unemployment. So Drifting is a callback to the tropical vibe.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
It's a unique take on the ever increasing wealth gap, and it's autobiographical and painfully real. Fun!
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I find the state of wealth disparity in the world gross and scary, while that's what guided us towards telling a story of someone struggling with his last handful of coins, we still didn't let our politics dictate the story. It remains true to my own experience of moving to Melbourne at 22 without any skills or work experience, and as such the protagonist is a drop kick.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
Originally I had this weird obsession with space, and letting the story, set design, lighting, and performance breathe as much as possible. I thought it supported his lack of money, but it just read like we hadn't tried very hard, and what it meant is as we finished editing we realized we had a really bland film. So got Michael Cusack of "Damo and Darren" fame to animate something for us.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The DOP Justin is a great actor! He had to step in at the last moment to play the interviewer, and he was hilarious.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Not really, I always knew he had it in him.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Some more likes on our facebook page.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We are currently looking for sales agents, and film festivals.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I'd quite like for people to try and read into the film making, because I don't know.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Was that a whale?
Would you like to add anything else?
Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to see the short film!
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I'm living and working in London, Dan Shore is doing some cool stuff we can't announce yet, Justin is still in Melbourne kicking goals.
