OUR TOP TEN - MAR
A mysterious healer struggles under the weight of her powers.
Interview with Director/Producer Martin McGreevy and Jace Wrigley
Congratulations! Why did you make a film called MAR?
After talking one night we realized our families share similar mythologies around healing/healers. That conversation sparked the idea for a film and propelled us into making MAR.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
This is a new take on a classic story that feels familiar and intriguing. We hope it leaves the viewer feeling transported and wanting more.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The film deals with the burden a special ability can have on the person who wields it. We’ve always been interested in the kind of loneliness that comes from such a thing.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
We ended up shooting the film three separate times. The first two times were like filmed rehearsals as everyone on the project found their own connection to the material. The third shoot we were able to harness all of that legwork and collaboration to help realize our vision.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Everyone’s been into it. Most of the feedback revolves around people wanting to know what happens next in our characters’ lives.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It’s challenged us to take filmmaking even more seriously – to continue making more and to invest ourselves fully into our passion.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
It’s just cool to be asked to be a part of it. We appreciate any opportunity for our art to reach more people.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We’re not aggressively looking for producers, agents, buyers etc., right now, though we are always keen to talk to anyone interested in our work. We take a very practical, hard look at how to make it in this industry. You have to prove yourself at whatever budget level you’re at. We live and work in small town Idaho. Turbotax labels both of us “below the poverty line.”
$50 is about all we can spare on films right now, and we are determined to make as many of these micro-budgeted shorts as possible. We feel if you can make a good film for $50 you can make good one for $5,000. If you can make a good film for $5,000 you can make a good one for $10,000 etc., etc.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Mostly we’d just love other actors and potential crew members to see it so we can continue to build a group of amazing, creative collaborators.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How much does it really cost to make a film with high production value?
Would you like to add anything else?
Thanks for reaching out to us and showing interest. We love your site and are happy to be a part of it.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We’re just finishing the edit and sound on a 30-minute pilot of our comedic web-series,
Interview: June 2016
