Interview with producers/actors Emily Bell/Ron Morehouse
Congratulations! Why did you make your series?
Back in April of this past year, we received word that our first short film "Future Boyfriend" would have its world premiere at the 15th Annual Tribeca Film Festival. It was a huge moment for us, and we immediately started to think about other projects we wanted to make. Some of them were big ones, but ultimately we wanted to do something very simple. We wanted to do something that would have a fast turn around and an easy post. We started to think about two person things that would be simple (co-workers, bar patrons, old friends, etc). Then we hit it when we thought…"what if we are two low level employees on HRC's campaign…like Veep meets It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia?" We thought this scenario was pregnant for so many fun/zany things to happen! We then reached out to our writer friend K. S. Wiswell and Hill Yes was born!
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this series?
We wanted to provide a respite from this crazy election season. We wanted to make something that ultimately was about friendship and the idea that love really does trump hate. Hill Yes!, is more about our two protagonists relationship, than a commit on politics. It’s a story about life long friends who need each others support and love to accomplish great things!
How do personal and universal themes work in your series?
The theme that "it takes a village" to make someone truly great is definitely something that is highlighted here. It's hard to achieve greatness by yourself and having a friend to help you along the way is essential to success. It also draws a parallel to what the two of us are trying to do with our production company. Being able to have a partner to create work with is a lot easier and more fun! Friendship and respect are things that ignite brilliant ideas.
How have the script and series evolved over the course of their development and production?
Initially we wrote Hill Yes as a series of sketches. We are very new to the writing game and we wanted someone who was more experienced and could really articulate the world of these characters. We were introduced to a brilliant writer named K. S. Wiswell who took our sketches and really crafted out the series. From there we were introduced to David Codeglia and we really lucked out with him! David has a vast background in film and TV! He helped further shape the series and was an incredible leader throughout.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We’ve had really positive, encouraging feedback. It's a comedy so it's important that people are laughing, but we've heard how inspirational Hillary and Clint's relationship is!
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The most surprising thing about the kind of feedback we’ve received is how many requests we’ve had to continue the series after the election. Although Hill Yes is a character driven piece and not meant to be political, we still questioned whether we’d be able to continue the series after the election panned out the way it did. It’s encouraging to know that people connected to the main characters, Hill and Clint, and are interested in following their story in the aftermath of the election.
What are you looking to achieve by having your series more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We’re really excited about being a part of a platform that supports and celebrates new voices in film and encourages women in this field. We hope that our presence here not only highlights our support of our fellow filmmakers featured on “We Are Moving Stories,” but also our commitment to continue working with others with unique, new voices.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this series’s message?
In order to make a season two, we need investors as well as more media exposure. So we’d love to speak with any journalists, bloggers, critics, etc. interested in reviewing and/or featuring Hill Yes.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this series?
Well…for now people want to know what HAPPENS to Hill and Clint? 2 die hard Hillary fans who have just had a major gut punch. I think season 2 could be primed for a lot of hilarious things to happen to them.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Bell-House Productions has several other projects we are developing. We are hoping to have a season 2 of Hill Yes and perhaps a feature soon!
