Santa Fe Film Festival - Greener
Three longtime college friends - all living very different lives in New York City - meet for brunch and leave wondering: is the grass always greener on the other side.
Interview with Director Alessia Gatti
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I decided to direct this short film because it tells the story of three women, three friends that have very different lives and a true friendship in common.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
It's fresh, it's short and in only 6 minutes it brings you into the lives of three different women, it's fun!
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Beginning with a very personal and intimate moment the film develops major themes around the word satisfaction and being happy with your life. The question that the films is trying to answer is are we ever happy with what we have? Or our friend's life looks always "Greener"?
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The script was ready and established at the time I got involved in the project, it has been written by Martha Frances Williams which produced and acts in the film as well along with Laura Vogels and Erica Cho. During the shoot there has been changed especially in the longer scene that goes through the end, I decided to have one of the actresses improvising on her monologue and that worked great, not only that take went into the final cut but it changed the end and completed the movie.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We've just got into our first festival: Santa Fe Film Festival and got great response.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I'm always looking forward, onto the next project, with the same actress Martha Frances Williams I've directed another short film she wrote, late this summer called Adulting, we're now finishing it in order to submit to more film festivals.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Awareness of my work, I believe, I love directing producing and acting. I currently have three projects been sent out to different film festivals and two more to shoot in the next month.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Greener could be expanded into a bigger project longer film, I'm always open to new collaborations. I've a feature film in mind for two years now, based on a French book and I would love to make that happen. The lead character is a French woman who begins a spiritual and emotional journey in the Amazon forest by herself, its a very interesting story and a beautiful role for an actress.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would love for people to want to see more, more about the three character's lives.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What should a woman be? Roles model are easy when we talk about stereotype: how a woman should behave what she should be doing at any stage of her life.
Would you like to add anything else?
As a director I always look for the truth in every character, I love to work with my actors and push the choices for each role or situations. I'm interested in life and to represent the simplicity and at the same time the richness of every moment.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I just came back from Italy where I co-produced a feature film, we shot for 5 weeks, now the film is in post production, I'm sure great things will happen once we release the film. In January I will direct another short film, and I'm looking forward to writing my feature film. I'm currently looking for a writer to work with.
Interview: December 2016
