Whistler Film Festival - Standby
Gary and Jenny share the same cramped “office space” as all beat cops: the front seat of a patrol car.
Interview with Writer/Director Charlotte Regan
I made Standby because I wanted somewhere to put all the funny characters I'd met and a police car seemed like the best place. From my comedic grandma to the rappers I've met creating music videos who will often try and get out of paying by offering you a playstation or something like that! They were just all incredibly cheeky yet likeable characters I wanted to throw together.
I hope you'll watch the film and laugh, as well as being a comedy it's also about the loving dads that struggle to communicate with their kids or their family, they show their love through their actions, similar to Gary (Andrew Paul) in Standby.
The personal themes are the father daughter relationship, it's strained and they never clearly communicate but there's clearly so much love there, I think the personal theme is also the universal theme.
The script went through so so many drafts after incredible feedback from all the crew members, we also had a lot of improv during the shoot and all the actors really embraced that and created some amazing content that was used in the final edit. The edit went through over 20 drafts, we'd send it out to anyone/everyone we knew from parents and family to filmmakers online. Just to get constant feedback as sometimes it can be hard to know what's needed after looking at a film for so long and through the entire process, a fresh perspective is always really helpful.
The feedback so far has been really good, everyone always seems to laugh at some point which is what I really hoped for. I've also watched it back a number of times and seen the areas that could of been improved so it's just been an incredible process that will springboard onto the next project.
I hope to just continue to make new connections through these incredible platforms that are out there for filmmakers.
We are still screening in festivals at the moment and hope to continue to do so for the next few months before our online release on Vimeo.
I hope people will laugh when they watch Standby!
Myself and the Producer Jack are currently two weeks away from filming our next short Fry-Up which is a drama so it's a new journey and a bit of a change from the content we created with Standby.
Interview: November 2016
