Anxiety #5
A man's fate is sealed within a Brooklyn tenement bathroom in 1983.
Interview with Writer/Director Jesse Foster
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
“Anxiety #5” is based on the poem of the same name by Scottish Poet, Robin Robertson. My Mother is responsible for discovering this poem and sharing it with me. After reading the two stanza poem, I was captivated and haunted by this short, dark, and visually striking tale of a man in a bathroom, and the events that transpire within this short period of time.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
With no dialogue, and relying strictly on visual storytelling, “Anxiety #5” is sure to leave a lasting impression.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Although it is a dark short film, it touches on male vulnerability and insecurity.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The changes and additions reflected in the script were mostly aesthetic choices in order to further suspense, and set the mood and tone of the character(s), within this hostile environment I was aiming to create.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
It has been an exciting, and humbling experience. To date, “Anxiety #5” has screened at more than thirty festivals, and has earned numerous awards. Consistent input we have received is that audiences want to see more, especially as a feature length film.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It has certainly been positive, especially to see, hear, and feel, the reactions from audiences when the film ends.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
wearemovingstories.com has a strong following and reputable online presence within the film community, showcasing an array of talented filmmakers of varying styles and artistic voices. To be included on WAMS would be a great compliment to our team, aiming to connect with new networks, and to share “Anxiety #5” as we continue our festival run.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We would be welcome to any/all of the above. With the ongoing success of “Anxiety #5”, our goal is to continue with our festival circuit, aiming to increase exposure outside of our immediate networks and markets, before we look to distribute and/or launch the film online.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
The goal is to make people feel engaged, uneasy, and ultimately scared in a short amount of time. The impact on audiences and the reception at festivals to date has been overwhelming, and humbling, to say the least.
Would you like to add anything else?
We are incredibly proud of this film, and greatly appreciate “Anxiety #5” being included here.
