Awareness Film Festival - Family Tale
This is the love story that leads to the creation of a family. Through love, loss, and determination, the definition of family is rewritten.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Patricia Beckmann Wells, EdD.
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
‘Family Tale’ is our son PT’s origination story. He is adopted. I made the film so he could understand how and why he came in to our lives.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Open adoption and miscarriage are topics that are taboo, and they do not need to be. This film opens discussion.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Motherhood is a universal theme and this is my experience with it.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The script flowed out in one sitting. The visual themes developed as I thought about the script.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The beautiful after effect of this film has been how people have opened up to me with similar stories. When I experienced this story, I felt alone. I had no one to talk to. After showing this film, I have found communities of people who went through the same thing, felt the same way, and survived. I wish I had access to them when we were going through it. Perhaps this film will change that in some small way. I will be there for someone else.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Surprised and given joy to my point of view.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I want to stop one person from feeling alone and broken.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Anyone who can reach women in need is welcome.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would like this to build a shared community of family creators who have experienced the drama of finding children to love.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How do you console a family who has experienced the loss of a child? How can the medical profession change into a more humane experience for people who are grieving?
Would you like to add anything else?
Thank you
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am creating a short film ‘Baby Don’t Cry’ with the band Big D and the Kids table, about a mother's unconditional love for an adopted child. It will be followed by Nanny Poof, an elderly lonely woman who saves the world by farting away the apocalypse, and then a longer science fiction film about the future of education.
Interview: October 2016
