Ojai Film Festival - Swipe Right
After being stood up by her Tinder date, Katie’s impromptu bar hookup goes horribly wrong.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Kendall Goldberg
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you! My film was a Junior-year project at Chapman University. I chose this subject matter because I am intrigued by the way my generation dates (online, through dating apps, etc.), and wanted to explore the comedy that could come out of it.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you want a look at the worst-case scenario from using a dating app (AKA, if you like to laugh), you should watch this film.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
This is a very relevant topic and deals with modern technology and its relationship to dating.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The finished product is pretty darn close to the first draft of this script — only changes being in dialogue. We went through a few different ways to kill off our character, Levi, but I’m really happy with our final decision.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I’ve received mostly positive feedback. I think so far the film has been well received, which makes me very happy. Also, people usually laugh when they see it, which is quite a relief.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Not really, no. It’s a pretty straightforward story and I’m confident that I accomplished what I wanted to with it.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Any word-of-mouth or publicity spread about the film will help it get to more eyes, which is always great.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Ultimately, this film was just for fun and a great learning experience for me. It’d be nice to get it distributed online somewhere once it’s festival circuit is up.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I want people who watch this (quick) short to enjoy themselves and enjoy the laughter, shock, horror — really whatever emotion — that comes from the moment.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Are dating apps really a useful way to meet someone you can spend the rest of your life with, or do they only form unrealistic expectations and dishonest relationships?
Would you like to add anything else?
I think those questions covered everything!
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Kendall Goldberg — Writer, Producer, Director — is in production on her next short, just completed a short film she shot in Chicago this summer — starring Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) and Jim O’Heir (Parks & Recreation), and is in development to direct a feature film starring Jon Heder.
Interview: October 2016
