Bluestocking Film Series - Minor Setback
Highschool dropouts and BFF's, Jessie and Angela come up with a brilliant excuse to skip out on work so they can spend a day at the beach. Laying in the sand, smokin' fatties and eating donuts is so close they can almost taste it... until something unexpected goes down.
Interview with Writer/Director Augustine Frizzell
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thanks! There are a lot of stories I want to tell but this one felt important and timely due to the lack of similar stories. It’s semi-autobiographical and I grew up in a lower-class neighborhood with challenges that a lot of kids face but are rarely shown on screen. I wanted to not only show this world, but wanted to do it in an honest and comedic fashion. There are very few female led comedies about teens from a lower socioeconomic background.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you like somewhat racy material that’s not exactly PC, you may enjoy this film.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I lived the life that these girls are living and I understand having good intentions and yet still making bad decisions. I think we can all look back on the stupid things we did as teens and those of us who prevailed and ended up turning out to be reasonably responsible citizens, can get a laugh out of seeing it on screen.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
This script began as a feature film, which we shot for very little money a couple years ago. I didn’t feel like the feature turned out as good as I had wanted, so I turned it into a short instead. I took a few scenes from that footage, wrote a couple new scenes to add to it and then made a short film out of it.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
So far, so good! It’s actually been surprising how many people respond to the film. I know this material isn’t for everyone and with comedy in general, it’s hard to pinpoint at what and where people will laugh, but the overall reaction has been very positive. People feel like they can relate the story to their own teens years and hijinks.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Only surprised by the number of people who’ve liked it. haha.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I’d love more people to see a film by and about female protagonists who aren’t stereotypical teens.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I’m always happy to expose people to the film on as many platforms as possible. Articles, festivals, websites, etc, are all helpful and great!
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Movies by and about females can be racy and/or funny and still find an audience. We need more of them!
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Have you ever known girls like this and if so, how do you feel about their actions?
What are you developing or working on now?
Currently, I’m working on remaking this film as a feature. (again!) I’m finalizing some rewrites and hope to go into pre-production soon.
