The Perfect Selfie
The Perfect Selfie is a short documentary about being aware of your surroundings and the safety concerns of going to extremes to get the perfect selfie.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Katherine Dudley
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I made The Perfect Selfie to educate people about the real dangers of taking perfect selfies and sharing inappropriate ones.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
The Perfect Selfie will show you the real dangers of trying to take the perfect selfie with real cases where people died. It also shows how dangerous it is to take and share inappropriate selfies online. On the good side of things, it shows how much fun selfies are, but to also remember to live and enjoy the moments you are in during your selfie moments.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Selfies are so popular and people don’t realize that there are dangers involved.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The script evolved based on the interviews from four professionals who know of some of the dangers first hand. They talk about the physical and emotional dangers, as well as the possible legal issues involved from sharing inappropriate ones.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I have received great feedback. It won a Bronze Telly Award, a film festival, and was officially selected into four other festivals so far.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback has surprised my point of view and has made it stronger.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on: www.wearemovingstories.com
I would like to achieve more awareness of the issue, because people are still dying from taking selfies. At least fifteen people died in 2015, and at least 6 so far in 2016.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
The attention of distributors or producers would be great to help amplify the film’s message. The short film gets the point across, but with backers I would be willing to create a feature.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would like for people to be more aware of their surroundings when taking and sharing dangerous or inappropriate selfies.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Do you think it worth going to extremes to get the perfect selfie to share online for likes?
Interview: October 2016
