Queens World Film Festival 2019 – Rooftop Refuge
A short documentary about Brooklyn local, Dave Malone, and how his passion for flying pigeons shaped his life.
Interview with Director/Producer/Editor Andrew Leibman
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I have a passion for making and watching documentary films. I am currently building up my portfolio of documentary work and this is the first recent piece I am proud to release.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
My film gives an insight into the psyche of a man who lives and breathes Brooklyn, New York. He tells his personal story through his life long passion for raising and flying pigeons.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
This film had no script or plan. I filmed it over two days and only found the real story when I sat down to edit.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The feedback has been fantastic. I was honored that National Geographic accepted the film into their Short Film Showcase as well as a festival run around local NYC screenings.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback reinforced my beliefs that it doesn't take a large crew, budget, or lots of planning to create something with an impact.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I am happy to share my film with more audiences and discover what new documentary opportunities it can lead to.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I would say that film festival directors are my main audience. If they enjoy my film, they may ask to include it into a festival, which will continue the exposure.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I want this film to inspire people about everything in New York. The people, attitudes, passions, diversity, and unique vibes are what makes this city special.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What does it take for someone to practice and enjoy their life's passion throughout a lifetime?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am currently working on a short doc about a deaf skateboarder.
