Olympus Film Festival/Amazon Prime/ReelHouse release 2019 – Fall
Fall delivers a unique perspective of psychological trauma faced by undercover operatives on their return from high-risk America’s anti-insurgent operations.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Vigil Bose
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you! I have great respect for the people who serve for the country, and I always wanted to make a film that touches their life in general. Further, I wanted to tell a story with all the mainstream elements from a highly artistic perspective that captivates an average movie goer by raising the intrigue amongst the international audience with a thriller mystery that features an Indian-American cast.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Fall is an experimental short film that conveys a myriad of emotions through images and the power of silence. Minimum dialogues are used where they are absolutely necessary to convey the context. Watching Fall gives the audience a unique perspective of psychological trauma faced by undercover operatives on their return from high-risk America’s anti-insurgent operations. The story and characters are built around the traumatic occurrences, internal conflicts and stressful experiences that an undercover agent encounters in life.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I have experienced inner-conflicts and stressful situations in life. Fall is made amidst many personal challenges. Following any distressing episode, psychological trauma can set in. This is a universal fact regardless of any demographics. I am confident that anyone who watches this film can relate to the internal conflicts that the central character faces in the film.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
I love photography, and I go for long drives and stop at places to capture the essence of nature. The story of Fall came to me during such a trip. After I had come back home, I started writing the first draft of the screenplay. Since I had no prior experience in writing a screenplay, I had to use a screenplay software to maintain the correct format. The screenplay had gone through many iterations within a span of three months before we started filming. Most of our locations were outdoors and wanted to use natural light as much as possible. So I visited each location 4-5 times, studied sunlight patterns, identified camera positions, story boarded the visual representation of each and every shot identified in the screenplay. Since all our cast and crews had other full-time jobs, we filmed only during the weekend and finished filming in eight days.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The response to this film has been enormous and beats all our expectations. We have received numerous feedback from festival judges who have asked us to submit to their own festivals. Our Northern Virginia premiere was held in Clifton during Clifton Film Celebration back in November 2018, and our show was house full. We also won two spectacular awards during the Clifton Festival. We have enjoyed all media interviews and meaningful interactions with the audience during Q&A sessions after every screening. We feel incredibly honored and, more importantly, extremely grateful to all of our cast, crew, friends and family who made it possible.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
From the interactions we had with people, we can confidently say that they could relate and understand the intricate elements of the film. However, some feedback challenges how I see myself as a filmmaker. But majority inspires me to go out and make more films.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We would be thrilled to have more people watch our film either on ReelHouse or Amazon and talk about it.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
This film's ending is open-ended and we purposefully kept it that way thinking if we can get a producer, we could develop the story of Fall into either a prequel or a sequel or even a feature film. Hopefully, they will see a potential in the project and in me as a filmmaker. Although we have been to so many festivals, we still think, we lack the American media coverage that it deserves to take this film to a new level.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
The psychological element of this film has a broader social impact and we like more people to resonate with the inherent message in the film.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
The lives of U.S. undercover operatives are rife with extreme intrigue and ever-evolving danger, and they are constantly using their tactical and technical skills to stay ahead of the enemy. But how does their life change once they return home?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am working on another story and it will feature more than three characters and I am not rushing to make a film right away. I want to infuse all the lessons learned from making Fall into the new one. And I am also looking for a producer who could help with our next project financially. Apart from my own project, I am also working as a Cinematographer for a comedy web series and also working on another upcoming project, Chained, facing the camera as an actor.
