Julien Dubuque International Film Festival 2019 – Electric Love
Five hopefuls traverse the modern dating scene in Los Angeles utilizing popular dating apps.
Interview with Writer/Director/Editor Aaron Fradkin
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
After using various dating apps in Los Angeles, I found myself incredibly frustrated in my search to find someone special. While bad dates can be hilarious in retrospect, I wanted to convey the frustrations I felt in a realistic way. I made this film to better understand modern dating, the effect that technology has on our dating lives, and raise questions about the means in which we communicate today.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Even if you've never used dating apps before, this film is a fascinating insight into a relatively new world. Technology is everywhere and has affected us all deeply - particularly in how we communicate with one another. This film exposes how easy it is to misinterpret information and how a simple conversation can resolve issues we may face, especially when getting to know someone for the first time.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
This film stresses the importance of face-to-face communication. Especially when you're single, or at the beginning of a relationship, it's easy to misinterpret intention. The irony of today is that we are more connected with our cell phones and with the internet than ever before, yet we often times feel disconnected from one another.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The first draft of the script was far more male-centric. Thankfully, I met my producer and co-writer, Victoria Fratz, who really helped to shape the female perspective and bring balance to the story.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Thankfully, we've received very positive feedback. People our age have messaged us to say how the different dating scenarios really hit home for them. Even older generations, couples who have been married for thirty or forty years, have given great feedback telling us that they enjoyed this realistic peek into the world of modern dating.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback reassured us that we made a grounded and relatable film. Regardless of your dating proclivity, there's something in the movie for everyone.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We'd love for Electric Love to get even greater visibility and find new people outside of our network to connect with. Cinephiles, filmmakers, or just moviegoers, we love hearing everyone's feedback.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Journalists would certainly help to broaden our reach to new audiences.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We'd love for men and women alike to feel as though someone out there understands what they're going through on their quest for love or just more personal connections.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Which character did you side with - Adam or Emma?
Would you like to add anything else?
We hope you enjoy Electric Love! We had a blast making it and we love the feedback!
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
The filmmakers, Aaron Fradkin and Victoria Fratz, are in the script phase for their next feature film, A Good Kid, which films this summer.
