Slamdance 2019 – Butt Fantasia
With the help of a magic hat, a man contemplates the good and bad times his butt has been through.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer/Editor Mohit Jaswal
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Butt Fantasia started as a sketch meant to play at the Fallout Theater in Austin, Texas. We played a bare bones two minute version for a midnight 4/20 crowd. From what I remember, the crowd loved it and it made us feel like we had something special on our hands. We spent a year finishing the film.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
It's like Fantasia, but a wizard can make butts wiggle around and do silly things. He makes butts wear sunglasses and kill each other, it’s funny.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Well I do feel like art is sort of like a therapy session with yourself. You're asking a question that you do not know the answer to, and at the end of the process you learn both the question and answer you were trying to learn. The Wizard character uses the scenarios as little moments in his life. He could do anything, but Nathaniel Hendricks, Zach Desutter and myself chose to have the butts depict scenes of death and destruction instead. What does that mean?! I dunno.
Butt Fantasia
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
It went from a sketch to a semi-narrative short film. It was fun creating each butt sequence, and tying to figure out how each scenario represented the Wizards past life, and possible trauma the scenes might reveal.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We've had test screenings, but our first official screening will be at Slamdance Film Festival.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
People seemed to like the original, but i have yet to hear a public response.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
It would be a cool thing to say that the whole world has seen my butt. At least one person from every continent seeing my butt pretend to be a giant monster destroying a cardboard city. That's a dream I never thought I'd have. Let’s make it happen, We Are Moving Stories!
Butt Fantasia
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I would love to have as many people as possible see this film.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We just wanted to see this idea come into reality and share it with others. The more exposure this film gets the better.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
We just wanted to make people laugh and maybe lighten up on nudity. We all got butts everybody, it's okay. So I guess my question is, does this film make you feel uncomfortable? Or, what about it makes you laugh?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Nathaniel Hendricks directed ULTIMATE WORLD, with Zach Desutter acting. It will premiere in 2019.
Mohit Jaswal directed GARBAGE with Redd Jefferson in 2018. He is working on his next feature film, an Untitled Sixth Street Project to shoot in March 2019.
