DocuWest - BLURRED LINES: iNSIDE THE ART WORLD
Welcome to a world you are not invited to.
Interview with Director Barry Avrich
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
My producing partner Jonas Prince and I felt that this was a very provocative world that is generally inaccessible and we wanted to explore both the business and creative machinations of this industry.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you wondered who determines the price of art, why the auctions command such explosive headlines and how a stuffed shark can be sold for $12 million, this ultimate film for you to watch.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Great question. In making over 30 documentaries, I always let my audience determine their own pov versus mine. However, in this film we feel that the art collector should buy art based on their visceral response to it versus its appraised value.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
It's a fluid process based on the power and insight of the interviews
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Phenomenal. Whether you are a novice collector, art lover or seasoned industry player, the film has stimulated debate and we love that.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback underlines our mission and belief that the art world continues to be mysterious, seductive and endlessly fascinating.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Exposing the passion to collect art.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Journalists.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We want to create a market for new artists and stimulate a market for people to buy art because they simply love it, not just as asset class.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Who determines the price of a specific piece of art?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am currently shooting a film called Prosecuting Evil, based on the last living Nuremberg prosecutor.
Interview: September 2017
