Interview with Writer/Director Sara Beth Edwards

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

SALTY is a project that’s very close to my heart because my grandmother was an extremely important person in my life. The relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren can be a very influential one and deserves to be chronicled and honoured.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

The humour is kind of cynical and bittersweet. I’ve always been fascinated with the notion of ‘poignancy’. The ongoing challenge of defining and capturing it. I’m also drawn to nuanced characters, naturalism and emotional landscapes.

How do personal and universal themes work in your film?

Among other things, SALTY explores the relationship between grief/loss and the commitment to change. The polarities of death and renewal as they manifest in all aspects of our lives. Ideas about time running out and regret, shaping the future and lending urgency to our desires.

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

The film is an improved version of the script certainly, but the material was pretty refined when we went to camera so it didn’t change a lot in post.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

Super positive, especially in terms of the tone, the performances, and the chemistry between our lead character Amber and love interest, Darcy. We just finished the film so it’s mostly been screened by people involved in the project. I’ve also used it as a sample for a couple of funding applications for other narrative films that I want to make.

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

Not yet, but probably soon!…

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

I hope people will dig SALTY and if they do, maybe have some curiosity about the punk RomCom I’m shooting next called FALL BACK DOWN. It’s about a heartbroken, ex-activist who takes a job in a sweatshop and ends up in a complicated love triangle with a bounty on his head.

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

A festival run is getting underway. Landing a distribution deal could potentially be great but I’m also excited about showing my work on my company website: Kiss Off Entertainment, so that’s also an option for sharing the film. www.kissoffentertainment.com

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

My greatest wish is that people enjoy the film and it resonates for them emotionally.

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

I’m happy to see there’s an uptick in films about strictly female relationships. Friends, lovers, family, intergenerational. Those stories have traditionally been devalued and over-looked but now the Patriarchal death grip seems to be loosening and I’m very proud for SALTY to be positioned in this specific landscape.

Would you like to add anything else?

I’m a dual Canadian and New Zealand citizen. The title is an homage to an early Jane Campion film called SWEETIE.

What are the key creatives developing or working on now?

We are heading gently toward pre-production on FALL BACK DOWN, a punk RomCom 🏴

SB wrote on Season 1 of the Netflix original series Travelers. She won the 2017 ‘High Scribe’ award at the Sun Valley Film Festival. She is a past participant in the RIFF Transatlantic Talent Lab in Reykjavik, the WGC Bell Media Diverse Screenwriters Program and is a recipient of the CTV National Fellowship.
