San Francisco Independent Film Festival - Temporary
TEMPORARY is a short comedic drama about a person's radical choice at the end of a loved one's life.
Interview with Director Milena Govich
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I have grappled with my fair share of end-of-life decisions for loved ones. When I was 21, I lost my father to an aggressive form of leukemia. Most recently, my family and I witnessed a torturous good-bye for my grandmother. These challenging experiences served as inspiration for my short comedic drama, called TEMPORARY.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Without disclosing too much, the story centers on one person’s radical choice at the end of a loved one's life. The film’s protagonist has a somewhat peculiar perspective on the final stage of life, and he encounters an obstacle that will change him forever. My goal is to make the audience laugh with this dark comedic drama while still posing a very important question about the end of life.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I think it’s fair to say, no one is immune to death. And many people don’t ever think ahead about what they want their last days in this life to look like. At its core, my film is asking the audience how they feel about these characters and how the central dilemma of the film relates to their own lives.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
We went through a number of drafts before shooting and made many adjustments through production and post. But the final film is very close to my original vision. All of our adjustments were simply to hone in on the major dramatic question of the film.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
So far the feedback has been very positive.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I knew when I set out to tell this story that it would be polarizing, so I expect that there will be plenty of people who will challenge the point of view in the film. But that’s what I want! I want people to get fired up over this issue and debate it among their friends and families. In that respect, I only succeed if people do have challenges.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I’d like as many people to see this film as possible. And I thank you for offering to help me achieve that with your platform.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
At the moment, I’m hoping to play as many festivals as I can.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have? What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
My goal is to strike an emotional chord with viewers that sparks a genuine debate. I want people to come away from the film and consider for a moment, “What the hell would I do in that situation?”
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I (Milena Govich) was just chosen to be one of 8 women in the AFI Directing Workshop for Women. It’s a highly competitive program in which I will direct another short film and attend classes and workshops over the next year.
