Waimea Ocean Film Festival - Call Me Peg Leg
Meet Rik or Peg Leg as he is now officially called, one legged chef, traveller and one of the UK's most exciting surfers.
Interview with Director Josh Hine
Watch Call Me Peg Leg here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
The production company I co founded (www.mattr.media) was commissioned by U.K. broadcaster 'channel 4' to create a series of 6 short films in the lead up to the 2016 Paralympic Games and this is one of them. The films set out to celebrate stories of amputees doing awesome things but not just with the typical Paralympic sport focus. You can watch the other 5 here: http://www.mattr.media/pimpeduplimbs
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Whether you're a surfer or not at the core of the film is a powerful, quirky and inspirational story, we can all learn a lesson from the character that is Peg Leg.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The film is a personal exploration of Peg Leg's character, a story of personal progress and positivity.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
There was no script for this film, instead we followed Peg Leg for a day and this is what we got up to!
What type of feedback have you received so far?
It's all been very positive, it's been picked up by a bunch of film festivals and racking up the views online. Winning the best short film category in the London Surf Film Festival was a highlight!
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Yeah, we've actually been blown away by the positive reception from the surf community. This isn't your run of the mill surf film as its more about the character and narrative than the waves but it's gone down really well with all parties.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Well first and foremost we want to get Peg Leg as much attention as possible, he certainly deserves it! Secondly we have many more awesome stories like this one we want to tell so we are now just looking for brands, sponsors, filmmakers and platforms to help us tell them. Maybe you have a story yourself that needs telling, get in touch: hello@mattr.media
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
All of the above really, we are currently working with Peg Leg now on creating a longer form film series about his adventures. We are now on the hunt for sponsorship to get it off the ground.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We'd love the film to challenge, motivate and inspire people.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What makes a surf film a surf film and how can the genre evolve to attract a new audience of 'non surfers'?
Would you like to add anything else?
Just wanted to give Peg Leg a huge shout and congratulate him on coming 5th in the world in the ISA adaptive surfing championships!
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We are working on a bunch of exciting projects at Mattr.Media this year from documentaries to adverts short films to TV shows. It's going to be a big one!
