Limbo-Limbo Travel
A group of solitary and disillusioned women take the Limbo-Limbo Bus and travel to distant exotic island to find the happiness they wish for.
Interview with Writer/Director Zsuzsanna Kreif&Borbála Zétényi
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you! We - with Bori Zétényi wanted to talk about topics we (and mostly everybody) were interested in- relationships, finding and fighting for happiness. We knew from the beginning, that even if we want to talk about serious topics, we want to tell our story in a funny way.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Because it's funny and touching, with sex, love and blood.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
It's a personal story, but we didn't want to write only about our own frustrations. That's why we choose 8 different women characters, and could hide behind them. We wanted to show attraction and love as an ancient, animal instinct, and make a contrast between two very different worlds. The civilized city, where the women come from, where they have to repress their desires and behave, and the innocent wilderness of the exotic island, with the peaceful, sweet indigenous men, where the women can find their real nature.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
First I had one scene in my head, as giant women are hunting tiny men in a jungle. At that point I called Bori, if she'd like to work with me on this idea, and we started to develop the story. We knew, that we want to change the "normal" gender roles, and make women the active characters, and men the sensitive, passive, gentle characters. We also researched sex tourism, which is such an absurd and crazy phenomenon, so it had a big impact on the film.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Mostly we received positive reactions, it's so great to hear the audience laughing during a screening. That was our biggest fear during the making the film, is it only interesting and amusing for us, or will others also enjoy the story and the universe of the film. And thank god it turned out that many people appreciated this kind of humor and visual style. But of course we met some negative critics also, some even got angry with us because of the twisted gender roles.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
We thought from the beginning that the film will divide people, as it's not a "nice " animation film. The characters are evil, the graphic style is rough, we show naked body parts and some aggression, but we didn't regret to choose this way.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We'll see, thank you for the opportunity!
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Anyone :)
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We want people laughing and thinking.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
The gender roles- how women and men "have to" behave
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
After finishing Limbo-Limbo Travel we started to work separately on our own projects. But a few months ago we cooperated again for a Hungarian tv series called Candide, Zsuzsanna as supervising director and Bori as leader layout artist. The series will be released in 2017.
Interview: September 2016
