AACTA #SocialShorts - Alone
A haunting story of one woman’s attempt to gain freedom and live as her true self no matter what the cost.
Interview with Director Erin Good
*
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I really wanted to work with a writer that I met at film school Huna Amweero. I had a feature film in early development stages that I thought would really suit her, but we hadn’t actually worked together before. So I approached her about doing a short film together and we made “Alone”.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
The way I would describe “Alone” in terms of audience experience is subtly confronting. In my opinion, audiences should watch this film because it explores issues of identity and control in a way that some people might disagree with.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The themes are obviously universal but I have personal connections to the prism through which we explore those themes (mental health, oppressive relationships).
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
Huna and I worked on the script together before receiving the Emerging Filmmakers Fund and continued to develop the story through pre-production. We received lots of feedback from other people, some of which was really passionately negative. Huna and I always discussed the feedback and took it on board, but at the end of the day we realised that this was a script and film that would make some people feel uncomfortable and that’s ok.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Some people are really moved by the film and others disagree with it.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I haven’t had anyone actually go into detail about how they received the film so I can’t answer that yet, but if anyone wants to I’m totally open to hearing your thoughts.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Getting into festivals and receiving accolades is of course awesome and needed to build a career but nothing beats just getting your film out there to an audience. What I really want is for people see the film, because when someone watches it and it means something to them – that’s the best feeling ever.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We have an amazing producer Belinda Mravicic but yes to all those other people.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I just want it to mean something to and resonate with people.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How is someone’s identity defined? What if how you view yourself is completely different to and in conflict with how other view you? Which version is real?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Erin (Director) and Huna (writer) are in development on their feature “Please Help”. Erin is also in development on a television series with writer Chris Squadrito and she’s currently in production for her web series “Jade of Death”.
Belinda is line producing Warwick Thornton’s documentary We Don’t Need A Map and developing another documentary Dark Emu with Dylan River & Bruce Pascoe.
