Erie International Film Festival - L'Encenedor Quàntic (The Quantum Lighter)
How do you actually prove that you time traveled?
Interview with Writer/Director Pau Escribano
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Having a drink in a bar this idea popped into my mind and I thought I had to do it. It was a simple idea and I thought it would be easy to make. Then you realize that even the simplest idea has its difficulty if you want to make it right. I put my heart into making this 5 minutes as enjoyable as I could.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you are a member of the audience and you have already sat down you should watch it because it's rude to just stand up and leave. It will take only 5 minutes of your time and it will surprise you and make you laugh at the same time.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I think that it personally reflects my passion for both sci-fi and comedy. Regarding the themes it talks about what it takes for us to believe certain things that seem impossible at first thought. This is the moment when the fantastic world crashes into the real world.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
The script was written in a day and later on it was shot in a day too. So it didn't change much, but the project grew with the collaboration of all the cast and crew.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We've won 9 prizes and we've been in more than 90 festivals all over the world. So we're very happy about it.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Sometimes it surprises you that people get something from the story that you didn't think about.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Any sort of promotion is always good. You contacted me, so I just said yes.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Any help is welcome.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I'm just happy if people enjoy it and get a laugh out of it.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How do you prove that you actually time traveled?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Always new projects.
Interview: December 2016

About the writer, director and producer:
His childhood dream was to become a writer, a clown or an astronaut. That’s why he wallpapered his room with stars that glowed in the dark. Two days later he was already sick of having to sleep with all those little lights. Licensed in Audiovisual Communication, he’s developed his career in TV, as a screenwriter of comedy shows such as Una Altra Cosa, Polònia or Crackòvia, which he also directed; in theatre, where he’s the co-author of La Família Irreal and Polònia El Musical; in literature, with his novel Aquell d’allà no sóc jo; in cinema, directing the short films Primer Contacte and L’Encenedor Quàntic and in the kitchen, mastering the hummus and the potato omelet. Although he is neither a clown nor an astronaut, he’s managed to make his living out of writing and directing comedy and sci-fi stories.
