You're Living A Fantasy
Interview With Director Lachie Strada
Why did you make this music video?
I was approached by The Velvet Soufflè to make a new video clip for a song that they we’re planning to release as a teaser for their upcoming album. It was also an excellent opportunity to develop some ideas I’ve always had locked away in the back of my head.
Can you tell us about the clip?
The clip abstracts themes present in the song such as cyber-identity, presenting it as a battle between two fabricated cyber-personas (two sides of the mirror - the delusional and the delusion) torturing each other like ketamine dreams in a surgical psych-nightmare.
What led you to this particular performer?
I’ve worked with The Velvet Soufflè before and we’ve always had a great working relationship. We seem to both progress as artists when we work together and gives us opportunities to experiment with different things. I find the songs have excellent production aspects and are written really cleverly.
What type of feedback have you received about this clip?
Seem to get a lot of “mind blown” or “this is an experience” sort of comments from The Velvet Soufflè’s Facebook. I think people have enjoyed it. My dad likes it.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It’s mainly gotten favourable feedback, so it sort of feels good. A good ego boost. I would like to see some more feedback though.
What are you looking to achieve by having this music video more visible on
this platform?
Hopefully just to have some exposure for both myself and The Velvet Soufflè. I hope it’ll attract more interest for more people who are interested in some similar production work for music video or short film.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a
conversation about this music video?
I guess the Cyber-politics represented through out the video boasts for a rich conversation on cyber-identity and how we are connected in the 21st Century. What is real and what is reality?
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I wrote this while I was travelling in New York, with the help from Samantha Kennedy-Helstrup - who also collaborated in helping produce the clip. It also features Steven Sammut (known for his recent role in the television show, Neighbours).
What next for you? What are you developing or directing next?
I’m working on some short film ideas at the moment. I’m still very interested in experimenting with visual techniques and writing. Working with a close friend who’s a professional writer on some stuff, so hopefully we will have the ball rolling and have something in production in July.
